Dhal and Rice Recipe

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Yellow dhal (rinsed and washed)
  • 1 small jam tomato, chopped
  • 1 stem curry leaves
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic
  • ¼ onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ teaspoon cumin (jeera) seeds
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Juice of a lemon
  • Water, as needed

Method

  1. Rinse and wash the dhal thoroughly. Place it in a pot with enough water to cook.
  2. Add the chopped tomato, curry leaves, turmeric, crushed garlic, Bring to a boil and cook until the dhal is very soft.
  3. Once fully cooked, remove the curry leaf stem and blend the mixture until smooth.
  4. In a separate pan, heat a little oil and fry the sliced onion with the cumin seeds and mustard seeds until the onion is golden and fragrant.
  5. Add the blended dhal mixture to the pan and stir well. Let it simmer for a few minutes until everything is well combined.
  6. Finish by stirring in the butter and lemon juice for flavor. 

Serve warm with Jasmin rice.
